Are student exchanges for a year a good idea?
I'm a sophomore in highschool and I'm applying to spend next year in Belgium or France. Are there any comments about experiences on exchanges?

A whole year = quite a stretch. I'm going abroad in January to Asia for 2-3 months. My friend who's an annual exchange student is miserable. Have you been away from home for a long period of time?

Yes.. you will learn different cultures and way of life.. plus a new language you can explore.... but one year is not long enough i think.... you need to develop friendship......

I'm going to answer from a parents point of view. One year is too long. AND if all my questions (who, what, where, when, how much, how long) aren't answered, it's just not going to happen. It's wonderful to think about the experience that you will have but I can't replace my children if something happens to them. Other issues that need to be looked at before travelling to any other country is the POLITICAL CLIMATE. That's probably more important than anything else. Contact the American embassy in the country you plan to visit. They can give you excellent advice on whether it's a good thing to visit or stay in that country.

It's an excellent idea, although most exchange programs operate based on the school year, so most likely you will be spending 9 months. It is a wonderful experience, but it will also require some adjustment. You will go from being really excited about your new country to being homesick and wanting to go back in a matter of days, weeks or months. You will need to be strong during this time and not lose sight of the bigger picture - make local friends, talk to your host family and advisors, go out and explore more of that new culture. After you get over that small bump, you will feel more familiar with your surroundings and free to enjoy your time meeting new friends and seeing new places. You will also realize that you are a stronger and wiser person because of it. By the end of your exchange year, you will be really sad that it went by too fast and that you did not get to do everything you wanted. You will be ready to go back home with all the intentions of coming back someday.
