European student can't fine her way in the different American degrees :?
Hello, I am from Belgium and I am going to study in the United States next year. I'll begin in a community college for the two first years, and then continue my bachelor in a bigger university. But there are a lot of different degrees and I don't really know what kind of studies is good for me... I am not a scientist, I like literacy and arts. I have already seen some universities and community college and it's completely different than in my country. The American government invests more money for their schools than in Europe ! So, I try to find a degree in which I could have some interactive courses... I like cinema, photography, all the visual arts, but I like also working with people like "cooperation and development", traveling and discovering some new cultures... I thought "journalism" or "visual communication" or something like that, but I'm not sure. By the way, I'm a little bit scared about my English level because it's very important... And what are the best universities for this kind of degree ? (I know there are some pretty good schools of art in California, Connecticut, Illinois,...) could you help me ? * Thanks and sorry for my poor English...

Do not be sorry./ Your English is better than the English for many of the postings on this forum. Use the college board site below to begin your search. You can also use a search engine to look for schools with a search string such as (name of Major) +classes.

Question about the belgian langage?
My friend, a foreign exchange student from belgium, always says "hiii" in the middle of sentences. What does this mean?

it means, "your breath stinks"

OMG you smell!

I'll make an educated guess. The same way we say 'erm' when we're thinking or 'dude' or 'man' at the end of sentences, (or 'right' and other confirmational words) I guess that's their word without a real meaning, but just added for effect.(or confirmation)
4 :
she thinks she is re-entering the room each time lol other nationalities, will say "yes" as in agreement, canadians will say "right" it could just be a confirmation of the verbal exchange
5 :
have you ever thought about asking her?? she's the best person to ask.
6 :
It just shows that she has not learned enough English to use the colloquialisms. I hope she understands the courses she is taking.
7 :
I'm Belgian - and belgians speak both Dutch and French by the way. There is no such thing as "The Belgian Language". I never say anything like "hiiii". Whatever that is.

they do it when they are stuck while speaking in english

High school student exchange italy, france? what was it like?
i live in canada and have good grades, i also know the company were going to do the exchange through (its a non profit organization called CEEF-ceef.ca) my guidance counselor said its a great idea, i can choose between italy, france, spain, mexico, belgium, the netherlands and germany. although you choose 4 countries on the entry for my choices go like this 1. italy 2. france 3. spain 4. belgium i speak french but you can go knowing very little of whatever language you speak in the country you choose. im just worried about 1 thing, first the person from the other country comes here and lives with me and my family for threemonths from mid-august to mid-november and then i go from mid-february to mid-may and i dont mind being away from my parents cause im used to that but im worried about having to be with this person in my home 24/7, no alone time with my best friends etc. can anyone tell me of their experience? advice? anything? Thanks a million!

I've hosted 12 exchange students now. The idea is NOT for them to "live in your pocket" while they are staying with you! You should introduce them around -- and maybe find someone else at school interested in introducing them around as well. Get them involved in some activities ... they need to make their own friends. However, you do need to make sure they are included in your major activities -- parties, social events, ball games, etc. However, you are not expected to have them go with you ALL the time either. Remember though, when YOU go on your exchange, that you need to make friends on your own as well! What goes around, comes around. You make this person feel welcome, they will make you feel welcome! Does anyone have additional information on the supposed "Kira" case in Belgium?
Does anyone have additional information on the supposed "Kira" case in Belgium?
I have heard and read about the mysterious murder that many people have started calling the Kira killing in Belgium. Interesting as it was, there did not seem to be much information regarding the case, nor did there appear to be a follow up on what had happened or even if the case had been closed. I know they had been suspecting medical students of conducting a sick prank, and therefore thats all it was. However, many speculate it could be the "Kira". I guess what I would really like to know is if anyone heard any additional information on it and any closing statements that might have been revealed. In addition, please state your opinions on the case as to whether or not you believe it to be a prank or possibly a "kira". (just interested to see what many of you think) Thanks a lot!
