I am going to Belgium over the summer and want to travel on the weekends, where should I go?

I am going to Belgium over the summer and want to travel on the weekends, where should I go?
I'll be there for 5 weeks from May to June. I will be taking classes during the week, so I won't be able to travel far then, but I plan on being somewhere new every weekend aside from the first weekend we get there. TENTATIVELY we are going to do Amsterdam, Munich, and Prague for the first 3 weekends which still leaves 1 weekend out there. Here is the thing though, we actually have no idea of where is good to go. We are 100 percent going to Amsterdam, but not sure about the remaining weekends. We are all young college students whose main motivation is to party hard at night, and see the world during the day. We don't want to have to travel longer then 3 or 4 hours by train for where we go, and I don't think we want to fly anywhere either. What are your suggestions for 5 21 year-old college Males traveling around Europe on the weekends? Also, while price isn't a HUGE issue, it does factor in a little bit which is why we don't want to go to France or Switzerland(as I heard those are the two most expensive places generally). What are your suggestions?

I say rethink Prague, that's a long travel which will leave you little time. There's a lot to see in Belgium as well. Consider Maastricht, dutch but with a difference. Paris is only a short hop by train and can be as expensive as you want it to be. From Belgium there's several budget airlines flying to the UK and there's the Eurostar both options make London feasible. Lille is often overlooked but it does have a nice old town and, being a university town, a lively student scene.
2 :
I wouldn't skip Paris. It's full of students (think: Sorbonne) and prices and places to accommodate them. And, please don't shortchange Belgium. Antwerp is one big party town and there are also a lot of music events, pubs and cafes in both Brussels and Gent.
3 :
You don't say where in Belgium you stay? Gent and Antwerpen are 2 cities with good clubs, bars, pubs,... but also nice museums, buildings, shops... http://www.pandhotel.com/gente.htm http://www.pandhotel.com/antwerpe.htm Maybe you can go to the Werchter festival at the end of your stay (but hurry up to buy tickets, almost sold out) http://www.rockwerchter.be/ Paris and London are both only 2 hours by high speed train from Brussels. http://www.eurostar.com/ http://www.thalys.com/be/en/

Help with a letter in French.?

Help with a letter in French.?
I'm going to be an exchange student in Belgium this year (for 10 months, I'm leaving the end of August) and I just found my host family who I'll be staying with. I want to write them an email in French but I'm having a little trouble wording things. I've taken French for a while in school and I'm not bad at it, but I'm nowhere near fluent and so I'd be really grateful if someone who has more of a grasp on the language or is a native speaker could proofread my letter and help me translate a few things. Here's what I've got so far (not so sophisticated, I know, but I really just wanted to thank them and say hi). AFS is the exchange program that I'm going with, and I just put "x"s where family members' names should be: Bonjour! Here's the part the rest of the letter. Some of it is in French and some the parts I weren't sure about are still in English. Sorry if it's a lot, I really appreciate any help: What is your town like? J'ai vu des photos en lignes et ce semble très jolie! What is the weather like there? En Pittsburgh, nous avons des étés chaud, les hivers froids, et il pleut souvent. Also I was wondering if Claire goes to the same school that I will be going to. I would love to tell you about Pittsburgh or the US so if you have any questions, just ask! I read that you hosted another girl from the US as well, what part of the country was she from? Merci, encore, pour tout. À bientôt j'espère, Judith

Okay Judith, I'm willing to help you. Just hold on a sec, I'll be right back... Bonjour! I never would have guessed that, lol!) et il pleut régulièrement. (Now you're just being lazy...) Judith Will that do? Please let me know! Have fun in Belgium by the way! P.S. Which town will you be staying in, if you don't mind me asking? Watch out for all those Belgian waffles... and those Belgian boys too, lol! Take care!

We stayed at a hostel for about $20 a night. It was late when we arrived and could barely find any beds available. So book earlier if you can, whether its a hostel or hotel. We visited the Anne Frank Museum, the Van Gogh Museum, if your into kinky stuff there are plenty of sex shows, the sex museum, coffee shops (weed), walking thru the red light district. We also took a boat ride thru the canal, it stops at several places that have interesting things to see. We also went to a flea market where you can find a bunch of interesting things.
2 :
Justme had some good answers. I would also suggest going to the Rijksmuseum, as they have all the Dutch masters in there, including Vermeer and Rembrandt. Also, if you want to go to an awesome restaurant, go to Kantjil en de Tijger, which has AWESOME Indonesian food. Its on Spuistraat 291. Order the Rijsttafel and wash it down with some Hoegaarden beer.
3 :
Amsterdam is very expensive. So look for some place like YMCA on the Internet.
4 :
The cheapest place is probably the Bostel in the Amsterdam Bos: their 5-bed mixed dorm is 10 euros a night. You're not in the centre of Amsterdam, but there is a bus which takes about 25 minutes. http://www.hostelamsterdam.com/index.php Now, how much money do you need: depends on what you want to do and whether you have one of those youthcards EYC, and what age you are. Museums cost between 5-10 euros, but let you in free in some cases, if you're under 18. Food - there is plenty of fast food and restaurants everywhere, but if you want something with local flavour, try neighbourhoods like the Jordaan. transport - rent a bike, or if you're coming by train, bring your own. definitely a good way to get around. the museum boat is good too because it stops at the tourist hotspots. And to see where to eat, what's on while you're there, check out: http://www.amsterdamhotspots.nl/ Finally, what you MUST visit: a couple of museums, a local market, the Heineken museum, a brown cafe, neigbourhoods like the Rivierenbuurt etc. Enjoy.
5 :
You could go to the grasshopper cafe, so smoke up
6 :
For best options wat u can do is go to a VVV travel information centre which is just near to amsterdam central station. they will provide u with all the details as well as information on hotels. Since u r a student i think one of the cheaper options to explore is to ask for youth hostel accomodations. There are many economical options available like day tickets for trams so that in one ticket u can hop on and off from any tram. The VVV travel info desk will help u to plan ur trip. Also buy a map kit as it has some worthy discount coupans (one kit offers discounts for 3-4 persons) so u can very well recover the cost of map as well as have healthy info with u to plan for urself. Also they sell tickets there so that u dont have to stand in queues at places like annie frank and the extra charge is 50 cents, but u can save time in queues
7 :
Vondelpark is nice just watch yourself go in the daylight hours to be safer. They don't call it needle park for nothing. Canal rides are definatley a must to do. The Anne Frank museum is nice too. I think they have like an all day pass for I forget how much and you can basically visit all the museums. Lots of WW2 stuff if your a history buff. Coffeeshop (not cafes) should definatly be on your list if thats your thing. Greenhouse has the best quality and selection. Try some baked goodies too, or the "smart" shops if thats your bag. Too much too see in two days. Amsterdam is a month long experience. I mean it takes two weeks just to get acclimated to the time zone/climate change. Happy travels
8 :
check out www.hostelbookers.com for cheap but nice accommodation

How much is the People to People trip through Europe.....?
(I asked this earlier but got no responses so I'm trying again :/) I got an invitation from People to People Student Ambassadors to go on a trip through Europe (England, France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Switzerland) and my mom is considering it but I'd have to contribute with some of my own money so I was wondering.... does anyone know about how much the trip costs?!

According to their forums, it cost $6500 last year, plus extras. One person said their total was $7100 plus spending money: http://www.peopletopeoplealumni.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=1968 There's another question asking the same thing, it has a little extra info if you're interested: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ai8CxlCyAlRJdbhaVOXuMh7sy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20100802091446AAJCHv1&show=7#profile-info-N6Pm9iAHaa

How long will you be there? Is accomodation taken care of by the invitation? If not, you will be looking at around 3000 to 5000 euros.

Is it legal for a University to assign trademarked games of others to its students for programming?
Dr. Tom Van Laerhoven of Hasselt University, Belgium, gave student Rutger Bevers my (copyrighted and trademarked) award-winning game Hijara to program. When asked, Laerhoven said, "Yes, we gave him the assignment to find a good AI for this game (Hijara). We take existing games because it's easier than inventing fake ones. Hijara was also in the assignment list last year. I looked at your game list, as far as I can tell, most of them would be suitable. I see no problem with this." As my permission was neither asked nor granted, I believe I am a victim of trademark and copyright infringement by Hasselt University. http://bit.ly/hijara

Well, then you can sue for damages, can’t you? What, no damages? Then what are you complaining about? Did not the university or the professor using his budget buy the game outright? As long as neither he, himself, nor the person he gave it to, republishes it in any way, no-one is being harmed.

Which European country should I go to?

Which European country should I go to?
Next year, I'm going to be a foreign exchange student, and I have to pick 5 countries that I want to spend an entire year in. I already chose sweden and iceland as 2 of my 5 top picks. Which 3 should I choose to round out my top 5? and why? Here is my list of countries that I wouldn't mind spending a year in. Let me know which ones you would choose! Belgium Latvia Czech Rep. Romania Russia Ukraine I'm 18 if that means anything. there are a lot of other awesome countries, but I don't meet the requirements for them, and I can only pick one that I don't meet the requirements for. they are: Hungary Netherlands Finland If you want to pick one of those, that would be great too!

don't go to Europe, it's overrated. go to Africa. much better.
2 :
You only increase the problem of the white genocide and mass-immigration to a country of which you do not belong to. Stay with your own damn people.
3 :
First of all, why is Holland not on your list? For shame! Anyway, definitely Belgium, they have good parties. I bet Russia and Ukraine are good places to visit too.
4 :
Czech Republic and Belgium would be at the top of my list, Belgium would be #1 if I couldn't live in or around Prague. Good for you though, either way you should have an amazing year. EDIT: Of your second list I'd definitely go with the Netherlands, Hungary and Finland would be great too.
5 :
Belgian people are douche bags. Don't go to Latvia, Czech Rep. might be fine. "Romania is the a$$hole of the world"-South Park. Russia is in Asia, Ukraine is a downgraded version of Russia. I would pick None, you got the worst choices. I hope this helped.
6 :
WTF?? Why isn't Germany there!! You should come to Munich, you just missed the Oktoberfest but the after party's are still running. Since Germany isn't there I'd recommend Belgium because they speak English as well as German/Swedish/French, also it is quite a "young" country, what I mean by that is that the younger generation are quite influential there. For e.g. They can sometimes determine student fees and protest heavily if the govt do not help them out enough. Also it is a multicultural society (this probably doesn't matter to you) and everything is pretty equal. I say Ukraine because that's the only one I know out of the other 3 (I know Belgium well) Ukraine are ok, some parts are good, they speak Russian and German and some can speak English, they have a big Football (soccer) league there. SO they are big on sports. The people seems nice, they recently elected a new prime minister, quite a young one and is good. Lastly, Russia preferably in Moscow, big city, lots of English speaking people there, main language is Russian and some French. (from the french settlers there) Lots of decent things to do there, basically it;s just a big city of fun but you can get lost easily and if you can't speak or acknowledge basic Russian it will be hard for you, this is why I chose this in 3rd place. DAMN, I gotta finish my last semester @ Uni then I'm off to forensic school but I gotta decide what country I want to study in. Everyone saying America. Man IDK! LOL.

I got nominated from my teacher at school and went to the week trip to New York. Do not go on the p2p trip. I regret spending all that money. The trip was the worst week of my summer and hated it. I am not one to get homesick, but I cried every night because it was so impersonal and there was so many students. They have over 1,000 students signed up for the inauguration of the president. That shows you that they are just in it for the money. I warn you, DO NOT GO! It is a waste of money, if anything, spend the money on going with your family or studying abroad for a semester. People to People is a rip off and a waste. They are just in it for the money!

Any suggestions on how to make enough money to go on my student exchange?
It's $7500 trip for six months (to belgium) and I'm 16. I have to pay for it on my own pretty much. I have 2 part times jobs, and in the summer i will be getting another one that pays like...500 a week. I make jewelery and such things to sell and I'm holding a chocolate bar fundraiser. Is it possible for a 16 year old to take out a loan from the bank? I also need spending money for the trip as well so...

You will not be able to borrow from a bank for this trip and it would be a mistake to borrow from anyone else. If you cannot save the money, you need to postpone the trip a year.

When to go and what to do in Mexico?

When to go and what to do in Mexico?
My brother is going to study in mexico city from February to June, so I will go there for 2 weeks (not 2 weeks in mexico city, I want to move!). When would be the best period to go (I want to avoid the hurricanes and spring break students...), and what should I absolutely see? I'd love to see archeologic sites, which ones are the best? And of course, couple of day at the sea! And if you know some good places to stay for the night (cheaper as possible, I don't really care about comfort, but I would love little places in the jungle for example), let me know! Muchas Gracias from Belgium!

Do you realize how big Mexico is? I think you might want to consult a tavel agent. Meanwhile, our favourite part of Mexico is the Yukatan peninsula...(South of Cancun) it has beaches, jungle and ruins. But it is a long way from Mexico city. It is also very affordable - ask about an "all inclusive" resort.
2 :
i was in mexico last year. its a lot there. better u cunsult travling agent, or mail me.
3 :
Mexico as the others said is big and diverse. You can see Native Peoples, Ancient ruins, International cities, Oceans, Deserts. Try this website: all about Mexico.com might be a start. you should do some research on your own. Spring break is spring break here in the US so you have to be the judge when to not go or avoid the students. If you would like to get out of the cold go in February and if you want to be out of the tourist season go May & June... Have fun...
4 :
There are lots a good places to visit in Mexico City. The Zocalo and the canals of Xochimilco, Zona Rosa, La Condesa to name a couple. Teotihuacan is a great archiological site very close to Mexico City (Chichen Itza is another great one in the Yucatan). There are other beautiful cities rich in tradition you could visit like Guanajuato, Querétaro, Guadalajara. You can drive there or you can also find affordable flights within Mexico via Interjet or Volaris. As far as beaches there are the obvious Cancun, Acapulco, and Puerto Vallarta, but there are several others that are just as beautiful and less hassle. Closest to Mexico City is Ixtapa- Zihuatanejo, but there is also Veracruz, and Playa del Carmen and several other beach cities along the Riveriera Maya. 2 weeks will go by very fast, I would just try to do a coupel things and really enjoy them rather than cram a bunch of things and places and not getting the whole experience. A good thing to do is have your brother get recommendations from his school, they can give you good info as to safety and good times to go.

What is the SAT scores minimum required for an international student?
Hello ! I have just received my TOEFL and SAT scores, I have applied to the University of Texas at Austin and to the College of William and Mary. My scores are : TOEFL = 87 / 120 SAT = 1390 / 2400 My SAT scores may be lower than the average, but I have a strong application (volunteer work in Africa and in different music festivals, sports, artistic skills, Latin and Greek studies and I speak French, Dutch and English... and I come form Europe with a green card) Do you think that I can hope to be admitted to one of those universities ? One more question : I sent my official transcripts 3-4 weeks ago from Belgium to US, and they are still in progress (and I totally don't know when they will arrive); I have already scanned and sent them to the universities, but it is not the "official" way... Do you think that it might not incline in my favor ? Thank a lot !

Most schools don't have a minimum.... but yes, your SAT score is a bit low. UT Austin and CWM are both competitive schools and they will be looking for scores closer to 2000, but you may be able to make up for your low scores if your grades are excellent. If you really want to go to school in the United States, you should look into some less competitive schools. You HAVE to send your transcripts the official way. They will not look at your application if you have sent scanned copies of your transcripts.

Question about People to People Student Ambassador program?
I recently got a letter inviting me to a 2012 summer trip to Ireland, Wales, England, Belgium and the Netherlands. I've heard the trips are from 2-6 thousand but does anybody know the cost of this particular trip? Also how did I get selected? I heard teachers nominated you(I'm in grade 11). How long is this trip? The website I went to didn't give specific info. Also What are some great ways to raise money? I'm looking for a job but right now its hard to find one. I really want to go on this trip. Do you pick who to share a room with or do they choose for you? Also I heard that just because I got this letter it does not mean I'm accepted. Like I have to go to an interview or something. How does that work if that's true?

I'm a Canadian student with average marks who wants to teach abroad?
I'm currently in grade 12 at a Canadian high school; I get decent marks but they're not spectacular, I get mainly 70's and low-ish 80's. I could get better marks but I don't apply myself in school that well. I really want to become an English teacher and do some teaching abroad. I'm currently taking 2 IB courses, IB French and IB english, and I'm doing fairly well in both of them. As I said, I hope to teach abroad someday; my ideal goal is to travel to France or Belgium and teach English to children whose primary language is French, as I am quite fluent in French. Thing is, as I mentioned previously, my other marks aren't that great. Can someone tell me if I have any chance of being a teacher, and if I do can you recommend some good Canadian Universities?

You are Canadian wanting to teach abroad in France or Belgium, my question is, why are you asking under the United States yahoo questions?
2 :
Yes you can still become a teacher but i would really recommend looking into teaching english as a foreign language. The one i know is called tefl, its cheap to get certified and it pays for itself. Basically after training a school board from a foreign country will contact your tefl rep and then if your chosen they will fly you out to said country and you do a six month stint teaching english. This looks fantastic on a resume and they also pay for you and your expenses and then even some extra.

Questions about People to People Student Ambassadors?
I received a letter from p2p to go on the european traditions in 09. We would be going to Ireland, England, France, Belgium, Whales, and Amsterdam for 19 days. I went to the info. meeting, but I wanted to hear from people who had been before. -Is the trip worth the $6,499 -If so, how should I raise the money (I'm already using my college funds for high school) -Is it really fun or just way to much packed into 19 days? -Do you get to meet the locals and socialize with them -Is it really safe? Thanks for reading and please only answer if you have gone on one of the trips

I have been on a P2P trip 10 years ago, but to Italy, Spain, and France. I'm not sure 19 days is worth $6,499, that sounds pretty steep, but now that I have a full time job, I do wish I spent more time traveling when I could. As far as money raising goes, I would consider writing a letter to friends and family asking them to contribute what they can (perhaps in lieu of other gifts), I would also advise you to try to get a job (and tell your employer what you are saving for) and otherwise attempt chores around your neighborhood-- babysitting, dog walking, etc. You do get unique opportunities to meet and socialize with locals, we met so many guides who taught us local politics and cooking techniques and spent a few days living with a local family. It is REALLY safe, on the side of overly safe-- that is, they make sure everyone is back and accounted for by curfew and keep people in groups and away from any sort of questionable neighborhoods. There is some free time, but also a lot of supervision. It's pretty fun, but if you don't want to learn as much and take in as much as you can, it may seem overwhelming.

Spain isn't good (been there many times). Its full of English tourists and tacky resorts no matter where you go. Your not missing much. Italy is gorgeous. Everyone is so nice and friendly, the towns and cities are beautiful. I went to Sorrento and loved it, which really only rubs it in your face as you can't go, but get there one day!! :P France is gorgeous from what I've heard. Just work like crazy on your French before you get there. They don't mind bad French, but they do mind not even making an effort to speak French. I would imagine Belgium to be very different to America.. France and Belgium I'd say would be pretty similar to each other. Poland is very different too, but its a very hard language. My friends went there and said it was interesting, but not very 'beautiful' like say France would be. I'd like to go there one day Germany would have also been a good one, as its a pretty easy language and would be really different to America. I'd put that down instead of Belgium or the Netherlands. I think you've picked good ones though

There is no absolute best place for everyone. It really depends on what your interests are. Any of the countires you listed could be great experiences for you. Choose the place that most interests you - they will all be sufficiently different from what you're used to that you can see, do, and learn a lot.

i have that same question i got the same letter but mine says im going to japan i dont know if its real i hope so
2 :
It is real, because i had the same question as you last year, and i researched that the invitation is real. However, it is really expensive, and i heard from people, who went there, that it is really boring. If possible go to HOBY, it is really fun and you learn a lot.
3 :
NO, it is not a scam! lol. i went on a trip last year with people to people to England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. it was the best time of my life! i met sooo many amazing kids and learned sooo much! it's not like school or anything, you pretty much go to a bunch of places and learn. you may have a silly little quiz every now and then; but you can't fail. they also give you a high school credit once you have completed the program. also, you were sent that letter because you were either nominated by a teacher or a student in your school that has been on a trip with them the previous year. they don't send it out to everybody....even if you don't have the best grades. yes...it is expensive. most europe (they have ones that go to asia and australia) trips range from $6,000-$8,000. although, you can pay by month (about $900 per month) or choose any other type of billing plan that you want. people to people also offers fundrasing programs. i know a girl that was in my group who raised every single cent for her trip! also, EVERYTHING is included in the price. hotels, 3 meals a day, attractions, transportation, airline tickets, etc are all included. Misc. Info: -most trips last about 20 days. -you go with a "delegation" which is made up of about 40 kids from your area as well as 4 "leaders" who are teachers from your area. -you have a homestay...where you live with a family in the country that you are visiting for 2 or 3 days. -you have to go through a process in order to be accepted (3 letters of reccomendation by teachers/adults and an interview) although, they accept most kids -you have monthly meetings with your delegation before you leave to get to meet the kids and leaders -IT WILL BE THE BEST EXPERIENCE OF YOUR LIFEEEE! have fun, give it a shot and good luck :]

google all the different places and read about them and decide which one you think would be more fun to be in.
2 :
First of all, it depends what you like more in a country. I think every country in Europe has it's qualities and it's disadvantages. It also depends from the exchange association. Going through one organization in one country doesn't mean that you will have the same benefits as going through another (the same applies for parts of the same country). Ok, by my opinion, you shouldn't be focused to developed countries. I think you can discover more about Europe if you go to one of the not so famous destinations. Although in a developed country you will have an organized way of living through the services provided by the country, the other countries compensate with the warmth of the people and an open mind to take you to interesting destinations. The same applies to towns and cities. In a city you will have a bunch of activities that you can choose from, so mostly people go to different places and they don't get to close to each other (I am talking of the group that will be in your exchange program). But in a town there will be a bundle of activities and you will mostly share your time with the bunch of people in your exchange program. That will make you closer. I speak from my experience. If you are thinking about a developed country I would say Germany, Netherlands. If you choose these destinations, keep in mind that you always have low fare plane tickets that you can book early and go to the opposite part of Europe (like Italy for instance :) ). If you choose an alternative tourism, embrace yourself for an amazing experience. You will meet one of the best organized people that will take you to parties and places every weekend. Of course that you can organize a trip on your own. In these countries usually your money will "worth" more (you could buy more stuff with the same amount that you bring from home, also the services are cheaper). My experience was through the IAESTE organization. If you have the option you can go to Macedonia (the Former Yugoslav Republic of), or Poland would be a nice destination. Hope this helped!

So, your Top 3 = France, the Netherlands, Belgium. I live in Belgium ^^. Just in between your 2 favorite countries and in your third favorite. 'Is France really different from South-America?' I haven't really had any experience with South-America yet... But personally I think that France is a fantastic country. The people are friendly and as you mentioned; the language is indeed very useful. In Belgium there are 3 communities: one of them is French-speaking. I live in the Dutch-speaking community but I got French lessons at school since I was 10 years old. So I pretty much know how to speak it (I'm a lot better in it than in English ). And French is a quite important language... Since I can't compare South-America with Fr, Be or the Nl. I'm going to compare the 3 countries mutual. France is a little more the southern way of life. (We'll do it, but we can still do it tomorrow.) The people are nice and everything is 'typical'. Personally, I really like it. I like the Netherlands less because generally speaking they're quite loud people, party type... I don't want to insult anyone, this is just my opinion and how I got to know them a couple of times. Then, euhm, Belgium. Yes, we're usually a little more polite. We have a really small country. Our education is one of the best in the world (unfortunately for me: that means that I have to work hard for school ^^) . We don't have a lot of place left to build in our country (in France you can drive a couple of hours without seeing anyone). Belgium is the country of the chocolate and the waffles. (No intention to bribe you) That's about it, I guess. I would say that the country, the closest to your expectations is indeed France. Afterwards I would consider Belgium. Because the people ('the nation') isn't that different, I think. Good luck choosing. x

European student can't fine her way in the different American degrees :?

European student can't fine her way in the different American degrees :?
Hello, I am from Belgium and I am going to study in the United States next year. I'll begin in a community college for the two first years, and then continue my bachelor in a bigger university. But there are a lot of different degrees and I don't really know what kind of studies is good for me... I am not a scientist, I like literacy and arts. I have already seen some universities and community college and it's completely different than in my country. The American government invests more money for their schools than in Europe ! So, I try to find a degree in which I could have some interactive courses... I like cinema, photography, all the visual arts, but I like also working with people like "cooperation and development", traveling and discovering some new cultures... I thought "journalism" or "visual communication" or something like that, but I'm not sure. By the way, I'm a little bit scared about my English level because it's very important... And what are the best universities for this kind of degree ? (I know there are some pretty good schools of art in California, Connecticut, Illinois,...) could you help me ? * Thanks and sorry for my poor English...

Question about the belgian langage?

it means, "your breath stinks"
2 :
OMG you smell!
3 :
I'll make an educated guess. The same way we say 'erm' when we're thinking or 'dude' or 'man' at the end of sentences, (or 'right' and other confirmational words) I guess that's their word without a real meaning, but just added for effect.(or confirmation)
4 :
she thinks she is re-entering the room each time lol other nationalities, will say "yes" as in agreement, canadians will say "right" it could just be a confirmation of the verbal exchange
5 :
have you ever thought about asking her?? she's the best person to ask.
6 :
It just shows that she has not learned enough English to use the colloquialisms. I hope she understands the courses she is taking.
7 :
I'm Belgian - and belgians speak both Dutch and French by the way. There is no such thing as "The Belgian Language". I never say anything like "hiiii". Whatever that is.
8 :
they do it when they are stuck while speaking in english

High school student exchange italy, france? what was it like?

High school student exchange italy, france? what was it like?
i live in canada and have good grades, i also know the company were going to do the exchange through (its a non profit organization called CEEF-ceef.ca) my guidance counselor said its a great idea, i can choose between italy, france, spain, mexico, belgium, the netherlands and germany. although you choose 4 countries on the entry for my choices go like this 1. italy 2. france 3. spain 4. belgium i speak french but you can go knowing very little of whatever language you speak in the country you choose. im just worried about 1 thing, first the person from the other country comes here and lives with me and my family for threemonths from mid-august to mid-november and then i go from mid-february to mid-may and i dont mind being away from my parents cause im used to that but im worried about having to be with this person in my home 24/7, no alone time with my best friends etc. can anyone tell me of their experience? advice? anything? Thanks a million!

I've hosted 12 exchange students now. The idea is NOT for them to "live in your pocket" while they are staying with you! You should introduce them around -- and maybe find someone else at school interested in introducing them around as well. Get them involved in some activities ... they need to make their own friends. However, you do need to make sure they are included in your major activities -- parties, social events, ball games, etc. However, you are not expected to have them go with you ALL the time either. Remember though, when YOU go on your exchange, that you need to make friends on your own as well! What goes around, comes around. You make this person feel welcome, they will make you feel welcome! For general info on being an exchange student, have a look at this website: http://www.exchangestudentworld.com/

Does anyone have additional information on the supposed "Kira" case in Belgium?

Does anyone have additional information on the supposed "Kira" case in Belgium?
I have heard and read about the mysterious murder that many people have started calling the Kira killing in Belgium. Interesting as it was, there did not seem to be much information regarding the case, nor did there appear to be a follow up on what had happened or even if the case had been closed. I know they had been suspecting medical students of conducting a sick prank, and therefore thats all it was. However, many speculate it could be the "Kira". I guess what I would really like to know is if anyone heard any additional information on it and any closing statements that might have been revealed. In addition, please state your opinions on the case as to whether or not you believe it to be a prank or possibly a "kira". (just interested to see what many of you think) Thanks a lot!

I did that program but went to France and Italy. Hotel rooms in Europe tend to be a lot smaller than ours no matter what quality they are. The hotels are nice enough. They're upper middle range. Nice but not gold fixtures or anything. Some cell phones work abroad and some don't so it really depends on what phone carrier you have. You have to contact your company about whether it will work. You can also rent phones while you are in England. Phone cards are also an option.

Study abroad in Geneva, Switzerland, Brussels, Belgium, Amsterdam, Netherlands, or London, England?

Study abroad in Geneva, Switzerland, Brussels, Belgium, Amsterdam, Netherlands, or London, England?
I am stuck. I am a junior in college who would like to study abroad the first semester of my senior year. I am interested in studying in either... Geneva, Switzerland (my own fear is that they don't speak much English there) Brussels, Belgium (they are very discriminatory? they don't always speak English?) Amsterdam, Netherlands (I think it's a cool city but I'm not studying abroad just to party) London, England (direct program with my school, but its all students from my school and I kind of want to do my own thing, great internship opportunity though) any advice? thoughts? personal experiences?

It depends on your major, the languages you speak and your personal preferences. The people in Switzerland all learn English, so you shouldn't worry about that. Amsterdam is beautiful, it has a really nice atmosphere and many young people. I personally didn't like Brussels very much when I went, it's basically just a big city. London is great, many clubs & cultural activities, lots of shopping streets but REALLY expensive. Expect to pay around 15 Pound for entrance into a club. If your major is related to business or anything the like, you should really consider Asia. The US will rely more and more on China and Japan...
2 :
Well I have lived and studied in two European countries, lived in a third and travelled to most (including all of your mentioned cities), so can work with this as background. Geneva is a lovely city and very international and multi-national friendly. English is widely spoken and actually a lot of expats live and work in Geneva for international organisations. So if this is your fear (about the lack of English) then don't worry Brussels - nice city but not really my kind of city, there was something missing for me, difficult to put my finger on it. I just found it a bit cold and missing of a certain atmosphere that I would like to live with. However again it is a very international city with internaitonal organisation and institutes which makes it very expat friendly. English is not a problem. It is spoken widely and at a high level. Amsterdam (I used to live there so I'm biased!) really great city to live, work and study within. Yes it has a reputation but actually is a very beautiful city and so much more that the boring stereotypes. There is a thriving foreign student population and again English is spoken widely and at a high level. It is more than just a party city and one that I really enjoyed living in (moving further south only because of high house prices) London - well this is probably the easiest city because of the language, but ask yourself if you are studying abroad for "experience" then personally I think it is more fun to pick a city where is it not so "easy" Again a great city, again very multi-national and a lot of foreign students, but I guess it depends on what you prefer So personally if I was in your shoes then I would pick Amsterdam as the first city and if not then Geneva.

What to do in Belgium in December?

What to do in Belgium in December?
A group of teachers and college freshmen are planning a trip to Belgium for December 2008. We plan to make Brussels our home base and use the trains, etc. to fan out to other areas. I'm concerned, though, about being there in the winter. We will arrive Dec. 26 ... what can we do for a week with the cold weather? I'm assuming that many attractions won't be open during the winter months but I may be wrong. Also, I'm looking for a reasonably priced hotel near the Central Train Station. Any ideas? Thanks so much for any help you can give me! I just returned from France with this same group and the students want me to plan another trip. I told them I would. :)

That is quite a challenge, finding something to do in the most boring country in Europe and the coldest most miserable time of year at a time when everyone is home celebrating Christmas with their families.
2 :
Brussels has plenty of attractions if you're wanting to sight-see (atomium or manneke p%s(statue of lil boy peeing) but hen theres Antwerp, Ghent, Brugge, Oostend (all will be cold though, and it'll probably rain the entire time too) But the good thing about belgium is its only a short train ride away from Netherlands, france, Germany, Luxembourgh, and England
3 :
Yes it is winter and cold. Idea? Well, the Brussels local Tourist Offices can provide visitors with details on the numerous nativity scenes on display, Christmas markets, Christmas and New Year's Eve concerts and other events. >There will be the biggest European Christmas market in Brussels from 1 Dec until 1 January. You should see it because it is considered as the most popular and well known Christmas market in entire Europe. You and your friends won't get boring at all. Also you can go to Winter events in Bruges as well and Christmas Village in Liege. http://www.visitbelgium.com/mediaroom/ChristmasMarkets.htm for hotel try to go to www.booking.com Have fun !
4 :
Sleep a lot?
5 :
Go to museums, yes not the best time of the year also not for shopping, because the shops make themselves ready for the winter sales at 2th January.
