How can I find an old friend who lives in Belgium?

How can I find an old friend who lives in Belgium?
Okay so this happened about 2 years ago. In our school we got a foreign exchange student from Belgium. After talking to him a bit we got him to hang out with us. One his day (which I didn't even know was gonna be his last until it was too late) he said he wanted to keep in contact with so he asked for my number. I gave it to him and I was just curios as to why he had asked for it. A week later we were told he had gone back to Belgium and that he had had problems in the home he was staying so he just wanted to leave. We were all sad and stuff but I hoped that maybe he would call me. Sadly though that never happened because I moved and so my phone number changed as well and I felt (and I still do) feel really bad for that. Although it was not my fault I think to myself that if he tried to call me then he would have found out that that wasn't my new number so he might have thought that I lied to him or something. I've been feeling guilty for 2 years now and all I want is to be able to tell him what really happened and to keep in contact with him. What I want is a way to find him through some site or something; a really good site that you know could get me to find him. I've tried looking in Myspace and Facebook but nothing of him comes up. Here's all the information I knew about him just I case anyone wants to take matters into their own hands: -his name was Kevin, I don't remember his last name -he lived in Liège, a city in Belgium, this he told -he was a senior when he came to our school so he was probably class of 08 or 09 That's all I know about him and it would be great if anyone could give any site where I could locate him or something like that.

Liege Belgium has a population of 187,000 people. So trying to find him with the limited information you have may be impossible. I had a close childhood friend who had to move to Germany with his family. Many years later when I tried to track him down, I had no luck even though I had his full name and the address he had moved to in Germany. Then one day recently, I was shocked to learn, from somone else, that he had moved back to my hometown a long time ago, and was living about one mile away from me. The sad part was that he never tried to contact me, even though I was living at the same address and had the same telephone number. As a result, I never tried to contact him.

People to People Student Ambassador trip?

People to People Student Ambassador trip?
I got a letter is July saying I get a chance to go on a trip with people to people on the european heritage trip that is going to England, FRANCE, germany, belgium, the netherlands, and switzerland. I already did the interview and got accepted, but I need help on the yearbook page about ourselves. Also, how was the trip, was it fun, and how long was the plane trip?

i went on a trip last year with people to people to England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. it was the best time of my life! i met sooo many amazing kids and learned sooo much! it's not like school or anything, you pretty much go to a bunch of places and learn about the cultures. you may have a silly little quiz every now and then; but you can't fail. they also give you a high school credit once you have completed the program. also, you were sent that letter because you were either nominated by a teacher or a student in your school that has been on a trip with them the previous year. They don't send it out to everybody....even if you don't have the best grades. yes, it is expensive. most trips range from $4,500-$8,000 (most around the $6,500 area). although, you can pay by month (about $900 per month) or choose any other type of billing plan that you want. people to people also offers fundraising programs. i know a girl that was in my group who raised every single cent for her trip! also, EVERYTHING is included in the price. hotels, 3 meals a day, attractions, transportation, airline tickets, etc are all included. The only thing that you will need to bring money for are souvenirs. Misc. Info: -most trips last about 20 days (i think most trips to asia are about 14). -you go with a "delegation" which is made up of about 40 kids from your area as well as 4 "leaders" who are teachers from your area. -if you are in high school, you have a homestay...where you live with a family in the country that you are visiting for 2 or 3 days. -you have to go through a process in order to be accepted (3 letters of recommendation by teachers/adults and an interview) although, they accept pretty much everyone -you have monthly meetings with your delegation before you leave to get to meet the kids and leaders -IT WILL BE THE BEST EXPERIENCE OF YOUR LIFEEEE! The only CONS that I can think about is the first day of your trip, you are awake for over 24 hours because you have a midnight flight and have to do stuff the entire day that ur flight arrives. Also, some kids didn't have the best homestay families and thought it was hard to communicate with them. Another con that i can think about is that you may not have the nicest leaders...on my trip i liked 3 of them but hated 1 guy. honestly, think about girl scouts when thinking about people to people. most people think its all about your trip....but really, the program starts wayyyy bfore the trip. for example, you will have monthly meetings to study/meet the people in your delegation and even have social events such as bowling! most of the kids that go on a people to people trip are really nice, smart (not genius smart...but usually honor students) and mature. you will meet such good friends!! Overall, you would NOT be wasting your time. You get a high school cedit, go to different countries, and make SOOO many amazing friendships! It really changed the way i saw the world and made me more independent.

There's nothing to be worried about. Relax and regard that exchange as fun and a new experience in your life. You have a unique opportunity to practise your pronunciation (probably French, right?). Trust me, I'm shy too, but during my exchange I could feel free. Even if you screw up, you may never meet again ;P

Would you choose Finland or Belgium for international studies?

Would you choose Finland or Belgium for international studies?
I am seriously thinking of going either to Finland or Belgium (months January to June) as an international student, but I have a huge dilemma as to which place is better. What do you think ? I hear that Finland is a beautiful area, the people are nice but quiet, the education system is the best in the world, and in spring the weather is great. (unlike the winter). On the other hand, I heard that Belgium is the heart of Europe, you can travel anywhere, the people are very friendly, and it's a beautiful medieval city. Shall I choose Finland for its better university, or Belgium for the people and travels? Does it matter to job employers where I studied? Are the Finnish generally shy or do they open up as they get to know you? I prefer an urban area than the city, and peacefulness, and also I want to find friends. Which place is better for a student life ? Please help,I only have a few days to make this decision, and it's driving me crazy!! I would greatly appreciate it!! Thanks!!

my friend is in belgium and said it has been the best experience but if finland has the best college and the people are nice you've nothing to lose whereas you can always go travelling around europe another time afer college good luck x
2 :
For International studies - chose Belgium. Brussels is the capital of European Union.
3 :
I would choose brussels, or even Antwerp,Belgium because i have been over there and there is so much architecture stuff to do and see. There is so much you could write on or study. Its very peaceful, and its very laid back, but isn't a small town. Antwer is the diamond capitol of the world.
4 :
I've been in Belgium before, it's beautiful and you will have the opportunity to learn french and eat fries, but I think that you should think on what you really want... if you are studying aboard just because you want to travel, go to Belgium and you will have the opportunity to travel around Europe but if you are studying aboard for you studies, you should think on which is the best school for you, and which one gives you more advantages and probably Finland will be the right one, but who knows just because it is said that the educational system is the best in that country doesn't mean that there are no good schools in Belgium, compare both schools so you can realize which is the right for you... Good luck and have fun in Europe!
5 :
I'd have to go with Belgium, although Finland is beautifull it lacks international appeal. Belgium is host to several international companies as well as NATO. Several othe countries (and capitals) are within driving distance (3 hours) which adds to your experience. Also, Belgium is tri-lingual so you might learn another language as you go along. Weather can be awfull in Belgium with lots of rain but this shouldn't stop you from picking Belgium.
6 :
Which school level that you are? And are you going for learning or tourism wise?
7 :
Well, I might be a bit biased as I'm Finnish.. Anyways, you're absolutely right, Finland does have a great educational system and the universities and schools are one of the best in the world. In addition, education in Finland is not very expensive. About Finnish people.. Many people think Finnish people are shy, quiet and don't talk much.. well, that might be the case at first. We may be a bit shy when we are just getting to know new people, but eventually we become open and talkative and all that. And generally, Finnish people are really nice, kind and speak good English. And I don't know where in Finland you'd like to study, but especially if you're planning to stay in Helsinki, there is quite a lot of stuff to do. As you said, spring time is beautiful in Finland and so is summer, when people of Finland are the happiest and most open. Winters are dark, though but you get used to it. : ) I warmly recommend you to come to Finland..: )
8 :
I think you would be helped if you would clarify your goals a little. What are you actually going to study? what kind of interests do you have for your free time? what kind of hobbies? what do you plan to work with after you graduate? if you look into linguistics or telecommunication or education Finland would be good to study in-other areas are not bad either, but these are quite good, likewise public health. If you are into economics, history, international law or organizations Belgium might be better. If you are into outdoors, music in your spare time , Finland is great.Arts and cultural history -then maybe Belgium. Students are friendly anywhere. In Finland they pretty much say what they mean -or nothing. In Belgium you will have easy small talk but hard to find what people actually think. For langauges, if you are American who has not studied any foreign language before 15 years of age you will find learning any new language hard work, if you are not supergifted linguistically. French and Flamish (=Dutch) are much closer to English than Finnish or Swedish, so they might be easier if English is your mother tongue. In Brussels you find humility in French usage which makes it more approachable -unlike in France -. BUt -you can study in English in both places and all young Finns speak Englsih, all Belgians , particularly the French speaking, do not. There are many more foreigners in Belgium than in Finland but we are bilingual with lots of Russian influence. Estonia and St. Petersburg and Stockholm are not that far. Sometimes 2 hours train travel in Finland will get you further than 1 hour in Belgium -because Belgium is so densely populated that there is a big city every 20 minutes -just as an example. These are just some thoughts, as you are not very clear. You could clarify your thoughts and take a phonecall to helsinki University Student Information after you have looked at the website where you will find the phone numbers -Finland is 7 hours ahead of eastern standard time, Belgium 6 hours- : http://www.helsinki.fi/studying/international_student_services.shtml just going helsinki.fi and clicking on the English you will find a lot -or just typing in studying in Finland. so clarify your goals -and welcome to Europe!!
9 :
ok.. i have friends both in Finland and Belgium. NOw, i dont know who's told you that Finland has the best educational system - from what i know it is Belgium whose degrees are worldwide recognized. Anyway, when it comes to this, it is ur decision. What i can say is that Finnish people are very cold, they dont talk to you unless you start a conversation and they can be quite rude sometimes - but only coz it is their way of being. I t is us who see them as rude. On the other hand, Belgium is like u said closer to other interesting countries. you can travel fairly cheap to Paris, for eg - i payed around 100 euros for a weekend in Paris from Belgium. People are more open than the Finnish and their language is more understandable (Finnish is very stincky language - u dont understand anything of it!!!!!!!!!) So, i would reccomend Belgium.

I'm sure you have nothing to worry about. People to people isn't a exclusive organization if that's what you are thinking. They will accept you if you can pay the thousands of dollars those trips cost. Try going to their website to get the email address of one of their reps and contact them. If not, then I am sure that you can sign up for the program again online. Good luck.

UCLA is going to want you to have core subject classes in english, math, science and history for any major you choose to do. Go to the UCLA web site and go to admissions then to international student to see all requirements. You should apply to at least 4/6 different colleges.

What is the next step after making lots of eye contact with a guy?
I'm a foreign exchange student in Belgium from California and I can speak the language but not too much. There's a boy at school that I've been making intense eye contact with for a couple weeks now. I said hi the other day, but I'm not sure what to do now. Should I talk to him? And if so, what should I say? I feel like I'm the one that does everything first, so maybe I should wait for him, I'm not sure. Advice?

Depending on how long you've been in the country i would suggest maybe asking him for a tour of the city. sounds kinda corny but it is a sure fire way to spend time with each other and it will make both of you focus all of your attention on each other.

My daughter was involved a few years ago. it's a good program, but it's expensive.
2 :
took my 11 year old daughter to their 'informative' meeting because no one would discuss the cost with me. As it turns out, the tuition for the Australia program is some $5,200 plus approx $800 for additional transportation, spending money, passports, etc. As I only work full-time at a clerical job, I had to inform my daughter we couldn't afford it after their presentation showed how much fun she would be missing. We weren't alone; I saw quite a few teary-eyed children on the way out - no doubt they also belonged to working-class families who couldn't afford the trip. My beef is the way they absolutely refuse to discuss costs until after their fluffy presentation. They should pre-screen the applicants according to household income as it certainly is a (maybe THE) deciding factor. It is so hard on the lower income children to get all psyched up just to hear 'No, we cannot afford it'. It is a program for the priviledged and wealthy, not the everyday gifted child, and they should advertise it as such.
3 :
Hey umm I cant really answer your question but I got that People to People letter in the mail did you happen to get the "European Heritage"? Because you have the same listed areas as I do.

Do the students in Belgium ride buses?

Do the students in Belgium ride buses?
The students who go to school ride buses to get there or what other transportation devices do they have?
Belgium - 4 Answers

well, students ride the public transportation just like everyone else. whether that means buses or trains, doesn't matter. now the buses also seem to be loosly based around the school schedules. during school holidays, for example, there are a lot less busses. and busses pass by schools very frequently around the time school gets out. otherwise, there are a lot of kids that get a ride in with their parents
2 :
yes with a cheap"bussy pass"for bus & underground(tram) or when they are old enough a car, but yes that's more expensive. Also many have a bike.
3 :
" Chantal/Duvelbeer is right!
4 :
When they turn 16, many get a license for a scooter/moped, a small engine motorcycle that many tweak so they could approach or exceed 65 mph while they are meant to go only 25-30 mph. And I agree with bikes, busses, trams and few cities subway.

Actually, pay careful attention to the cultural norms and eat as they do and you'll be fine. North Americans eat quickly and don't stop to savour their foods. They also just eat way too much. But if you look at a culture like the French (sorry don't know much about Belgium food culture), asking for seconds is taboo, as is snacking. If you enjoy their foods but also enjoy them in the same way that they do (slower pace, smaller portions), you'll be just fine. Actually, since Europe spends a lot more time getting around on foot in general, you may find that you come back in even better shape than before - even though you're eating richer foods, and all the so-called "bad" foods we try to avoid in Canada. The book "In Defence of Food" by Michael Pollan talks quite a bit about how the French eat full-fat foods, drink "too much", smoke, and yet are still healthier than us. It's an interesting read which you may find some good guidance from for when you're over there (and when you come back too!)

It's VERY expensive -- little more than a tourist trip. I personally feel that, while you will probably have a good time (depending greatly upon the tour guides) it's way overpriced for what you get. You could take that same amount of money and pay for most of a full year exchange with an organization such as YFU or AFS. It's also not without it's problems. Before you plunk down your money, I'd read this site: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/travel/people_to_people.html

I just received a letter from the People to People Organization. They are offering to send me to England, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands for the summer of 2009. I was wondering about the cost, and whether or not it's worth the money. My family is a little tight on money right now, so I need to know what I'll be spending my on. Also, I was wondering if some of the people that went in the past could tell me about their experiences, and whether or not you could tell me about you would do it again.

I received a letter last month, inviting me to go to Japan. I had to decline because of the expenses (not counting room and food, just the airplane flight). I think this is overrated because these rich kids have the opportunity to "buy" high school or college credits. I strongly think that there should be financial aid or full scholarships. It's up to you if you want to go. I heard that it was a great experience. But think about it--you can still get high school or college credit for free... instead of tossing in 5,000 dollars. Good luck and I hoped I helped!

He met wonderful kids with whom he made the trip and he had a fabulous time attending many events as well as learning about the different cultures. The cost is somewhat expensive but they ask you to write letters to solicit donations from friends and family. I would highly recommend the trip. I am looking to send my son when the trip for Australia comes around again.

The straight a's theory is not true. The leaders do not judge you by your grades. They judge you on your maturity level. To get in, you have to submit some forms, two teacher recommendations and one adult recommendation. After that, one of the leaders will contact you and set up an interview date. The interview determines whether or not you're accepted, but don't worry about it. It's really simple. Once you're accepted, you attend a series of meetings to prepare you for the trip and to get to know some of the other students in your delegation.

Hey:) I'm 16 years old, I've moved to Belgium last year. I can't speak French very well, but I understand everything they tell me. I need a job desperately, and I'm wondering that where do I look? Is there some international students office, or something like that? Thanks in advance Daniel

The main area you may find a Summer job would be at the seaside in the shops, cafés, restaurants or hotels. Another possibility, but as you do not speak French this might be a bit more difficult, would be in the Ardennen which is also a very touristic place during the Summer. Your best bet would be the seaside. Take a day off, take the train to Ostende and check out the ads stuck on the front windows of the different establishments. That's the only way you will be able to find a student's job. (in my very modest opinion) Another possibility - doable in every big city that is visited by a lot of tourists e.g. Brussels, Bruges, Yper, Namur, etc...- is as a tour guide. I wish you luck. Hope this helps.

Contact your local bank, if you have an account there you are more likely to get help. They are the providers for student loans in America, even if you go through Mohila, the banks are the lenders that actually provide the money. They will be able to help you out, and they do provide loans for US students studying overseas.

Which People to People Student Ambassador trip should I choose?

Which People to People Student Ambassador trip should I choose?
I am trying to decide between two. European Heritage - England, France, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, and Switzerland (20 days) Exploring Europe - England, France, and Italy (19 days) if you could tell me how much either of these trips cost, that would be appreciated too.
Other - Destinations - 2 Answers

just weigh the pros and cons the first trip is more days, but youd get to spend fewer amounts of time at each. theres 6 countries in 20 days should average about 3 days per place and 2 extra days. this may or may not include traveling. trip two would give you 6 days in each! (thats a lot of time!) youd get to do a lot of things and really get the chance to explore. just decide is it worth more to see more places, or worth more to see more of one place. no matter which trip you choose you'll have england and france. But maybe you really want to go to Italy? maybe. choosing which countries appeal to you could help decide as well. Im traveling to Germany and Switzerland thsi summer as well as England and France, and Ive heard that Switzerland is absolutely beautiful! But Id still take Italy over Germany, guess it just depends on preferences.
2 :
go on european heritage! i went on exploring europe last year, it was an EXCELLENT experience, but i realized that we were on the bus A LOT which is never fun. considering that european heritage goes to more countries, choose that! i'm 100% sure that exploring europe is $6,500 and %80 sure that european heritage is also $6,500 or at least around that. are you going this summer or next summer??? because it usually depends upon if there is a delegation leaving from your area thats going on that specific program....

I did the same thing-exchange for 11 months except I was living about a 1 from spain.Really hope you have a good host family-if you happen to be going with AFS Im sorry, I had a terrible experience with host family because they just take anyone to host...and my case of being forced to clean and yelled at all the time was not a 'bas case' in my area. I ended up leaving at the 8 month mark from being miserable. Just PLEASE try to some how be good with your host family..ita very very important-you have to live and sleep there and see their faces every day... But with school your first day will be scary but people are pretty intersted in the exchange student and will probably talk to you or if not they'll be willing to help you. If your french isnt so good most french people can speak some french-enough to help you with stuff around school. The parties there are really fun and going to cafes is nice. I had a really great experience with friends and school and it was such a shame that I had to go home early-my family nor I wanted me to live with that family anymore. make sure to say hello with bisous to people who are with people you know and such-like a guest at the house, its found rude if you just say 'salut' or 'bonjour'. always carry and dictionary with you just in case.Oh yes and try as much as you can to avoid english..itll help you pick up french really fast.. If you arent used to eating with your family for every meal at home then that'll be a shock because french people do unless your home alone or out.

Are student exchanges for a year a good idea?

Are student exchanges for a year a good idea?
I'm a sophomore in highschool and I'm applying to spend next year in Belgium or France. Are there any comments about experiences on exchanges?
Studying Abroad - 5 Answers

A whole year = quite a stretch. I'm going abroad in January to Asia for 2-3 months. My friend who's an annual exchange student is miserable. Have you been away from home for a long period of time?
2 :
Yes.. you will learn different cultures and way of life.. plus a new language you can explore.... but one year is not long enough i think.... you need to develop friendship......
3 :
I'm going to answer from a parents point of view. One year is too long. AND if all my questions (who, what, where, when, how much, how long) aren't answered, it's just not going to happen. It's wonderful to think about the experience that you will have but I can't replace my children if something happens to them. Other issues that need to be looked at before travelling to any other country is the POLITICAL CLIMATE. That's probably more important than anything else. Contact the American embassy in the country you plan to visit. They can give you excellent advice on whether it's a good thing to visit or stay in that country.
4 :
if you have improve your major, that's no problem.you can exchange.before i aslo doing like this, that's no problem for me.this is my interested for myself and believe yourself can do it.God bless you!
5 :
It's an excellent idea, although most exchange programs operate based on the school year, so most likely you will be spending 9 months. It is a wonderful experience, but it will also require some adjustment. You will go from being really excited about your new country to being homesick and wanting to go back in a matter of days, weeks or months. You will need to be strong during this time and not lose sight of the bigger picture - make local friends, talk to your host family and advisors, go out and explore more of that new culture. After you get over that small bump, you will feel more familiar with your surroundings and free to enjoy your time meeting new friends and seeing new places. You will also realize that you are a stronger and wiser person because of it. By the end of your exchange year, you will be really sad that it went by too fast and that you did not get to do everything you wanted. You will be ready to go back home with all the intentions of coming back someday.

It will be easier and faster for you to just find a job. Many movie theatres hire folks as young as 14, but it may depend on your state. If you don't want to do a traditional job (although this is prob the fastest and most reliable way to make money) you can do babysitting and dog walking and various other things to earn money.

I got a letter for this program to go to England, France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Switzerland for the summer of 2011. For anyone who has been, what is it like? Is it worth the money? What is the process like, because I heard you have to go through interviews and an application process? Tell me all you know about it and if it's worth going! It would be the summer before my senior year, and I think it's worth a try to at least go to the meeting because it would look good on college applications. But I'm not sure! Thanks.

Okay, I literally got back from a People to People trip 5 days ago. It was THE best 3 weeks of my life. I went to France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, and Austria. I made sooooo many new friends that i miss already. It is 100% worth your money. It is the best experience I've ever had. I mean it. I'm only a freshman but I will never forget it. You have an interview with your leader and pretty much everyone is accepted (although some people...let's say should not have been :P). THen you go to a few meeting to get a picture of what the trip will be and to give you travel tips about packing, jet lag, etc. On the trip, since its more than 1 week, you make friends with EVERYONE! i now have 40 new friends :) It really sad when you leave because you really love the countries you've visited and all the friends you've made but thats what cel phones and Facebook is for :) Deffinatly the best experience and great on an application :) GO ON THE TRIP! best memories of your life :)
3 :
I got a letter too, but I would be going to Australia! My friend actually just got back from a trip through them. She went to Austria, France, Italy, and Switzerland. She said it was the best time of her life, a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I haven't had a chance to ask her about the selection process or anything. But, I do know that you need 3 letters of recommendation. And, at the meeting you get to talk to students and their families who have gone on previous trips. They can tell you how to raise the money and all of that stuff. I am going to the meeting, so I hope my parents let me go to Australia next summer! Feel free to email me if you want to talk about anything, or tell each other how excited we are!

I would expect the cost to be around 40 Euros per hour. (try googling it!)
2 :
In the States, the going rate would be about $15- $20 for just a native speaker, higher for someone with a degree in teaching. 40 euros sounds really high to me, but things are more expensive in Europe.

The Rotary Club offers scholarships for students pursuing masters degrees abroad that cover tuition and fees. You need to get into contact w ur local rotary club to apply. These scholarships are very competitive, and if you are starting your courses next fall then u are a little too late to apply, so i would look into them for the following year. Also, keep in mind that as a graduate student you will be eligible for up to $20,500 in low-interest federal student loans, so if the scholarships don't work out you will still have a significant amount of loan money to fall back on.

What about an exchange program like YFU, AFS, EF, or NYU? I believe they all do summer exchanges aimed at high school kids (usually 15-18). There is Rotary too, but Rotary prefers year-long exchanges in most places. You can find all of those easily online and they are all good programs.

You could try Cactus languages - and explain the situation to them. I would expect the issues arises from them not wanting to take responsibility for him when he is not at lessons, but inmost cases they are able to find host families to accomodate the students. This is not only a good way for him to get aquainted with that Country's language and culture, but it is also cheaper than standard accomodation, and may get you around the issue of responsibility. Here's the link - http://www.tumbit.com/partners/cactus-worldwide-ltd-worldwide-language-courses.html

Surname Firstname Streetname number Postcode Town Some will put B- before the postcode and town but is not compulsory. They charge per size. One standard, one non-standard. Be careful with cards. some are odd sizes and they cost more to send, especially abroad. There should be a collection point for mail in the building. If there is a packet delivered and you are not in the postie will leve a card for it to be collected from the post office. You will need id to collect..

Is people to people student ambassador programs a scam?
I got this letter saying that i was invited to go to england, france, belgium, and the netherlands to study at these places . It says its founded by presdent Dwight D. Eisnhower. If anyone knows about this program, like if i have to pay to travel or if its fake please tell me.
Studying Abroad - 2 Answers

1 :
Well, it's not a fake. But it has changed drastically since it's inception. Now there is little left of the educational part and it's much more an over priced tourist trip. Trip costs can easily reach $6,000+++. Your letter is one of thousands that are sent out each year by this organization, so while it makes you SOUND special, it's really not. The money you would spend for a 3 week trip could finance a good portion of an ENTIRE YEAR exchange with an organization such as YFU, AFS or Rotary. You'd also have all the benefits that go along with such an exchange such as cultural and language immersion.
2 :
NO, it is not a scam! lol. i went on a trip last year with people to people to England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. it was the best time of my life! i met sooo many amazing kids and learned sooo much! it's not like school or anything, you pretty much go to a bunch of places and learn. you may have a silly little quiz every now and then; but you can't fail. they also give you a high school credit once you have completed the program. also, you were sent that letter because you were either nominated by a teacher or a student in your school that has been on a trip with them the previous year. yes...it is expensive. most europe (they have ones that go to asia and australia) trips range from $6,000-$8,000. although, you can pay by month (about $900 per month) or choose any other type of billing plan that you want. people to people also offers fundrasing programs. i know a girl that was in my group who raised every single cent for her trip! also, EVERYTHING is included in the price. hotels, 3 meals a day, attractions, transportation, airline tickets, etc are all included. Misc. Info: -most trips last about 20 days. -you go with a "delegation" which is made up of about 40 kids from your area as well as 4 "leaders" who are teachers from your area. -you have a homestay...where you live with a family in the country that you are visiting for 2 or 3 days. -you have to go through a process in order to be accepted (3 letters of reccomendation and an interview) although, they accept most kids -you have monthly meetings with your delegation before you leave to get to meet the kids and leaders -IT WILL BE THE BEST EXPERIENCE OF YOUR LIFEEEE! have fun. and good luck :]

just attend the meeting tht's on the paper and they'll tell you all about it and how much it cost. it can cost $10-4k but all fees are included but if you go you should bring at least $500 for snacks and souvenirs plus you get to do rly cool activites and meet some of the greatest ppl ever =] you can also receive a credit for going but you have to complete the assignments they tell you to do such as completing a journal, an essay about the country(ies) you're going to, and the online quizzes
3 :
i went to france, england, and whales when i was 12 and it was really fun. You make friends with people you will never really meet in everyday life. In 2006 i think it was $5000 but its worth it. Some people in my group fundraised all of it.You can also get high school and college credit if you do their assignments journal, projects, ect. You also stay with a homestead family for about 3days and you get to see what there life is like. Im still trying to figure out why I never got my letter but they skipped right too me missing the info meeting. Im really confused! I got the application book tho cause they sent it too me. Go on there webstie and click apply now on your program and itll tell you!
2 :
I read the information provided on their website. No mention of the amount of money required and no mention of whether or not my reservation suggests a no way out clause. Suppose I'll just have to find out at the information meeting in October.
3 :
My son just got a letter this afternoon too. We looked at the website and I see no mention of a price, but I'm sure it's going to be pricey! We did reserve his spot for the informational meeting, but he knows it may not fit into our budget. I do not believe going to the meeting will cost you anything but your time and gas to get there. The whole point of the meeting is to inform us about the program itself. I'm just a little leery about sending him overseas after reading the complaints on People to People. They have even had a death resulting from lack of providing medical care. While this particular student had pre-existing conditions, he was denied medical attention when he so desperately needed it. I know that when i was in middle school I went on a trip to Washington D.C. (not sure if it was People to people) and it was a great experience. i saw thing and went places I never would have had the chance to in my small town life. I know this would be a great experience for the children, just do your research and attend the meeting.

If you do not speak any French nor Dutch you will have to go to an International school, likely an American highschool in Belgium. Those will be as close to a school in America as they can get. To go to a local school you will need a good knowledge of the local language and a working knowledge of the other, even when you go to a school that teaches in English, if you can find one. That because both languages will be compulsory subjects in the earlier years and the local language will be compulorsy as subject, also for the exams.

It much differs between free or state education of course but I'll point out the similarities. Most schools have tables (for two), sometimes especially in the lower years these tables are equipped with someplace to put one's books, but as there is much travelling around from classroom to classroom it's unlikely that will even be used. Most schools don't have uniforms but for sporting. All schools however follow the same system, imposed by the regional government, I'm not going to explain it because that will take me too much time, you can of course check Wikipedia for the article Education in Belgium http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_in_Belgium All lessons however are in the regional language, or partially in the language the lesson is about. (French will be given in French, Dutch in Dutch, English in English and German in German) In other words, you'll be only able to survive during the English classes. Some years ago a famous and Important Walloon politician wished to send her child to my (Flemish) School, the school refused because he didn't speak Dutch. As you don't speak either I don't think you'll come in the regular network until you speak one of the languages.

Excellent schools in Belgium - High schools are called "athénée" for boys, and "lycée" for girls - Some private high schools are called "colleges" - Generally no uniform in athénées and lycées - But they have them at times in colleges - Seating is variable - either single desk per student, or shared table - Depending the area you will be, language will either be Dutch or French - Brussels has both - you choice there - Many teenagers speak some English - You will be a little lost in the beginning with another language - But after a while, it will get better - Best is to use and live with that language all the time in the beginning - Make friends and chat with them, watch TV news and movies - I changed my language 3 times in my life - I grew up in Brussels, speaking French - Went to university in USA, then lived there 30 years with English - And at age 50, I moved again, Argentina, had to learn Spanish for my job - It took me only 3 months to survive in Spanish... at my age...! So I am sure you can do at least as good - .

They don't have high schools. They have streaming. Some catholic education establishment have uniform codes. And no, you will not survive in mainstream education speaking only English. Unless you end up in an international school and none of it will matter...
